Hair and beauty salons use AI for six jobs: replying to booking questions on Instagram and WhatsApp, answering the phone with a voice assistant, sending reminders, filling cancelled slots from a waiting list, asking for Google reviews and preparing social media posts. The cut, the colour and the relationship with the client stay with the stylist.
A salon's real shortage is usually time. While the stylist works on a client, the phone rings, an Instagram message arrives and three people ask about times on WhatsApp. When the reply is late, the client books somewhere else. AI takes over the repetitive part of that load.
Which salon jobs can AI make easier?
- Booking questions: “Do you have anything tomorrow afternoon?” gets a reply drafted from the salon diary.
- Phone calls: when the stylist is busy, a voice assistant answers and records the booking request.
- Reminders: a reminder goes out a day and two hours before the appointment.
- Cancelled slots: a freed slot is offered to clients on the waiting list.
- Review requests: after the visit, the client receives a link to leave a Google review.
- Social posts: captions are drafted for before and after photos.
How are booking questions from Instagram and WhatsApp answered?
Salons mostly take bookings by phone, Instagram message and WhatsApp. These three channels are gathered into one queue. The price list, service durations, opening hours and staff details are written down once, and incoming questions get replies drafted from that information.
For the replies to be right, the diary follows rules. A colour does not take the same time as a cut, so each service has its own duration and preparation time. Staff days off and holidays sit in the diary. The easiest route is to let clients pick the time themselves, so the booking link goes on the Instagram profile, in WhatsApp and on the Google Business Profile.
Meta's AI feature in the WhatsApp Business app can also be set up for this. Questions are answered from the salon's information and the salon can take over at any moment. Clients are told plainly that they are writing to an assistant. If the answer is not known, nothing is invented and the conversation passes to someone in the salon.
What can a stylist do when the phone rings mid-appointment?
A stylist holding scissors or a hairdryer cannot pick up the phone, and a missed call is a missed booking. A voice assistant closes that gap. The call opens with the salon's own greeting, common questions are answered and the booking request is recorded. The request lands with the salon, and a person in the salon confirms it.
Callers are told they are speaking to a voice assistant. Audio is recorded only when the caller asks for it and agrees. We describe the setup on our AI voice assistant page.
How can a salon cut no-shows and empty chairs?
A no-show leaves a slot empty that another client may have wanted. The simplest remedy is a reminder. In the booking systems we build, reminders go out by default a day and two hours before the appointment, by WhatsApp, SMS or email, with a cancellation link inside.
A cancellation link looks like a loss, but it helps. A client who cannot make it releases the slot early instead of at the last minute. The slot returns to the diary and the waiting list is notified. Deposits can be taken for selected services if the salon wants, with a refund rule the salon sets.
At the end of each month, the report shows occupancy, the no-show rate and the most popular times. The salon picks its quiet-day offers from that table rather than from a hunch. See our salon booking system page for the details.
How does a salon get found on Google and in maps?
Clients often look for a nearby salon on Google Maps. Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. The same page says that more reviews and positive ratings can help. So the Google Business Profile should be complete: services, opening hours, real photos and a booking link.
To collect reviews, a short thank-you message with a review link goes to the client a few hours after the visit. There is one firm limit. Google forbids asking for reviews in exchange for discounts, free services or money, and removes those reviews. The request goes to everyone in the same way, with nothing offered in return.
Some clients now ask AI assistants the same question. In our own measurement on 23 September 2026, ChatGPT answered part of the local business questions with a map card that showed ratings and review counts. For Damla Subar we set up the Google Business Profile, Google Analytics and Search Console together with her site, and SEO, GEO and AEO work is ongoing. We explain that work in our guide to GEO and AEO and the salon website on our hair salon website page.
How can AI help with social media posts?
A salon's strongest content is its own work: a before and after, a new colour, a bridal style. AI drafts captions for these photos and a weekly posting plan. The light in a photo can be corrected, but the colour and the cut are never changed, or the client will not find in the salon what they saw online.
A client's face is shared only with their permission, because a photo is personal data. No post goes live without the salon's approval. See our social media management page for the full service.
Where should a salon not use AI?
- Health questions: the assistant does not answer questions about dye allergies or skin conditions; they go to the stylist.
- Complaints and price discussions: an unhappy client talks to the owner or the stylist.
- Messages without consent: promotional messages go only to clients who opted in.
- Photos without consent: a client's face or hair is not posted without permission.
Where should a salon start?
- Count for a week which channel booking questions come from and how many go unanswered.
- Write down service durations, prices and the staff rota once.
- Set up online booking and reminders.
- After a month, look at the no-show rate and occupancy, then decide on the next step.
ALTAI Digital starts with a discovery of about a week, covering the salon's booking flow, channels and diary. We then prepare a demo. Every part we build joins one panel, so bookings, messages, reviews and posts are followed on one screen. We explain the method on our digital transformation page.

Questions about this article
What is AI useful for in a hair salon?
Mostly bookings. Questions from Instagram and WhatsApp get a reply drafted from the salon's own information, calls are answered by a voice assistant and reminders go out on their own. The stylist keeps working while the diary fills up.
Will clients know they are talking to an assistant?
Yes. The setup tells clients plainly that they are writing to an AI assistant. It replies only from the salon's information; when it does not know the answer, the conversation passes to a person in the salon. Complaints and price discussions always go to a person.
Can a salon booking system work through WhatsApp?
Yes. Clients open the booking link from WhatsApp, the Instagram profile or the Google Business Profile. Reminders go by WhatsApp, SMS or email and include a cancellation link, and a cancelled slot returns to the diary.
Can a salon offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's rules forbid asking for reviews in exchange for discounts, free services or money, and such reviews are removed. The right approach is to send the same polite review request to every client after the appointment.
How can a salon reduce no-shows?
Reminders go out a day and two hours before the appointment, with a cancellation link. Clients who cannot come release the slot early, and the freed slot is offered to the waiting list. Deposits can be taken for selected services if the salon wants.
Where should a small salon start?
Count for a week which channel booking questions come from and how many go unanswered. Then build one thing, for example online booking with reminders. After a month of measurement, decide on the next step.
